Chula's Statistical Computing Center, built by Prof. Bundhit to house Thailand's first computer.

Thailand's First Computer: the Dawn of Thailand's Information Age

Prof. Bundhit organized the purchase of Thailand's very first computer. The machine, an  IBM 1620, became operational on 9 August 1963, marking the beginning of Thailand's Information Age.

Prof. Bundhit  led the organization of computer programming classes (taught in FORTRAN and COBOL, both new languages at the time) here at the Department of Statistics. These classes were open not only to the department's own students but also to the general public.  Many students from other departments, as well as government officials and people from the private sector, took the country's first computer programming classes and became Thailand's first generation of Information Technology specialists. Even people from the United Nations took computer programming classes at the Statistical Computing Center.

The 1620 had a market price of over 2 million baht, a very large sum of money at the time. (A person with a million baht, or a "sethi ngoen lan" in Thai, was considered rich in those days.) In the spirit of Prof. Bundhit's great organizational and fundraising skills, we hope to raise 10 million baht for the chaired professorship in his name.
